Romancing Your Soul Absolutely Brilliant!

The Outliers and belonging

In the section, The Roseto Mystery, Gladwell investigates a town of Immigrants who left Roseto Italy in the 1880s and 1890s to come to America. Most of these people settled in one area of Pennsylvania which they eventually named after the town they come from in the old world. The new Roseto looked very much like their old town, everyone in it spoke Italian, and in the early 1900s it was a little island (like any other small immigrant towns around that part of America) unto itself. Where the story gets interesting is in the 1950s. A doctor in the region of Roseto commented to a researcher that he rarely found anyone from that area who dealt with heart disease. At that time there were many people researching heart disease so this presented a mystery worth investigating. Also, at that time, before cholesterol lowering drugs, many men died young because of heart disease. As the research was done, sure enough, this little community had staggeringly healthy hearts. The heart disease in men was shockingly low compared to the surrounding area and national averages. The team researched the diet of these people, their exercise patterns, and all the usual suspects when it comes to heart disease. To their surprise, there were no dietary behavior or normal health pattern that surfaced to indicate why these people were so healthy. They finally concluded it was not a physical dynamic. I’ll let you read the whole story in the book, but here was the conclusion. Their health was positively impacted because of their commitment to community. They shared meals together, sat on porches in the evenings, talked and laughed. They greeted each other warmly as they met in the streets. The people in the town of Roseto seemed to really love each other, care for each other, and function as a big family. What a message for our day and age.

Tigger or Eeyore?

Never underestimate the importance of having fun.....I'm going to keep having fun because there's no other way to play it Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted No one is pure evil. Find the best in everybody. Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you. Brick walls are there for a reason. They are there to give us chance to show how badly we want something, and they keep out those who do not want it badly enough. It's not about achieving yoiur dreams but living your life. If you live your life the right way, the dreams will come to you. We can't change the cards we're dealt, just how we play the hand. If I am not as depressed as you think I should be, I'm sorry to disappoint you. and, as always, it's better to be a Tigger than an Eeyore

Book of Awesome Gpp 3O1 - 2012/13 edition

You've played a long hard game, youre still sweating. youre exhausted. All you really want to do is go home and sleep. youve worked youre butt off all game and done all that you can for your teammates. you take off all of your equipment after the coaches after game speech and you step out side of the rink into the cool winter air. you feel like you could play another game. you feel awesome. The moment when the game is on the line, when your team is counting on you. You can see it, the glory, the satisfaction of putting the team on your back and finishing the job. The stands are full, the noise is overwhelming, but you look straight ahead at the server and think that this is your time to achieve your goals The feeling you get when your "crush" finally asks you out. The feeling you get as you walk through the amazing haunted house hosted by, non other then IDCI leadership, and you know its all fake but can't come to terms with that at that moment. The feeling you get when you have to walk on stage to receive an award. The feeling you get as you reach the top of a roller coaster just before you go over the edge. Awesome. Getting into a bed at night for the first time all day, relaxation taking over you for the night. Waking up to birds chirping and bacon, but then hearing about the bus delay BEFORE getting into the shower so you can go back to sleep. Looking at the sun rise while riding on the bus, getting back your test to see you got perfect, pressing the elevator and the doors open automatically, seeing your favourite candy in a store and having the exact change so you don't need to break that $20 bill for a measly $2.45. Plus the cashier is now happy too. When you're going though Toronto without all that traffic, and you can go 120km without one stop all the way to your destination. Getting to hockey finally on time so there is that time to warm up with the team, tying up your skates and getting the first goal of the season. Feeling love for the first time and this time not for just your cat. Getting an assignment done with no stress, having a good nights sleep for the next day to start all over again. AWESOME. That moment when you're having the worst day ever and you walk down the hall, feeling like you're about to break down into a loud, uncontrollable sob, then you see that one person. That one person that can make you smile no matter what mood you're in. And BAM. Your day has become a million and ten times better, just by seeing this person's face and remembering every dumb or stupid thing that that person has done, just to see you smile. Awesome Top of a mountain looking down over the cloud line. Crisp winter morning with two feet of freshly fallen snow untouched by any other. The sun just peaking over the mountain across the way. Its silent. Then suddenly your best friend wizzes by tauntingly shouting at you to hurry up. The you off. Racing at top speeds as the scenery bolts past at lighting speed. All is silent but the sound of your own cheers and hollers! skiing is my life and It. Is. Awesome. A Cup of Coffee You are in Starbucks, scrutinizing the menu for what seems like hours trying to find something. Something that would warm your body to the core after a long, tiring walk in your trip back home in a chilly weather. You approach the cashier with your order in mind, finally asking for a grande vanilla latte. The machine is malfunctioning, he says, and so you wait. The guy at the cashier finally brings the cup of latte that you've been waiting for to the other counter to your near the exit. But, wait, you haven't paid, yet. "It's alright," the guy shrugs. "It looked like you could use a cup of coffee." Just like that, the coldness in your limbs evaporate, replaced by warm and fuzzy feelings of happiness radiating into your hands and to you heart. AWESOME! The warmth of the water when you first step into the shower, as the steam fills your nostrils and the new found warmth on your back as you make that sigh "awwww" the amazing feeling you've been waiting for all night is now yours, you wait five minutes before even reaching for the soap because this feeling is so good!Awesome. The smell of bacon cooking on the stove as you wake up and know its going to be a good day because your mom started your day with the amazing bacon she cooks. Awesome. You wake up extra early to Iron your favorite pair of boxers, you just finish and put them on. best feeling ever!awesome. You just made that tremendous dig in the volleyball game by taking the ball off the face and still got it up, it knocks you unconshious, when you wake up your happy because your told your team got the point because of it!Awesome!!! Your First Kiss. You're both sitting there awkwardly, with butterflies aflight in your stomach. You look up from under your lashes and make perfect eye contact. Your stomach drops and you feel like doing cart wheels, but you sit perfectly still. You don't make a sound as your heads naturally start to tilt to opposite sides and your bodies start to gravitate together. You take your last, sudden breath and pause just for a minute. Your mind goes blank, your heart stops and suddenly your lips touch...Awesome. sometimes before you go to bed you are sitting on the couch bieng lazyor you just got home and your in a rush, either way your hunger exceeds you, but you dont want to eat. you crawl into bed, hungry and tired and bareely get to sleep. but you wake up in the morning feeling 'meh' but you get up and remember that you are gunna walk out to that kitchen and pour yourself an extra big bowl off cereal.. maybe two. awesome! Nothing beats a white Christmas in Canada. At any age when you first open your eyes from your humble rest. You lay there for a moment and then all at once you realize it's Christmas morning. You wrap yourself up in your blanket and run down stairs still wearing your pyjamas from the night before. You go down those stairs to see your Christmas tree. Sitting all around your tree is presents from friends, family and loved ones. Hanging over your fireplace is you stockings filled with presents and sweets. Family slowly starts to open there presents there expressions are outstanding whether they love or hate the gift they have been given is something amazing to watch. Everytime someone says "thank you" or "I love you" the room gets warmer and more filled with joy. After the fact, you sit down on the couch drinking a warm hot chocolate which you feel the warmth slide down your throat, all around you is empty boxes, ripped wrapping paper, and so much more. Nothing can compare to that sweet joy of giving. Christmas is pure happiness. Awesome. New pair of shoes. Napping after school. Acing a test. Sleeping in. Breakfast. Playing hockey. CHRISTMAS. Freshly baked cookies. Ice cream cake from DQ. Candy Apples. Beating cancer. Meeting a famous person, or your hero. Leftover lasagna. The smell of a new car. Snow days! Hug from your grandma. FREEDOM! Roots sweatpants. Old TV shows. Playing board games. Having a hot shower after being out in the cold. Bus Delays. Road Trips. FLORIDA! being in a punk band. Lazyboys. Green Tea from Tim Hortons. Grandmas Soup. Chocolate milk. The crisp cold feeling of an october breeze that brings memories, the good and the not so good. You get a sense of life filling you from head to toe. Its a reminder that your still alive. You become cold, but its enjoyable cold thats bearable. You know it will soon be halloween, and you become motivated, the years end is drawing closer, a new beginning and an end soon approach. Sweater weather, thats my cup of tea. The feeling you get when you find someone you can completely trust and tell anything too, someone you feel your complete self around and you aren't worried to say whats on your mind right in front of them weather it's something private, personal, important, funny, or just a total random thought. Someone who you never run out of things to talk about with, someone who loves you inside and out, for better and for worse. Someone you never get tired of hanging out with and someone you miss as soon as you're not with them. Someone you can call your best friend and mean it. Now that's just awesome! You can hear the crunching of leaves under your feet, smell the cool, crisp air, hear the geese as they begin to migrate south, the children playing in the streets. There's the anticipation of what you'll be this year. Those once-a-year stores open, and you just know, the feeling's there in your stomach. Halloween is coming. Landing a new BMX trick-... Going in for a new trick on your bike. you've been here before numerous time at the top of a hill getting ready to go of the ramp. To try the same trick you've tried a couple dozen times before with no avail. You start down the hill feet going round and round as fast as they will go going as fast as you can. You then reach the base of the jump and your body gets ready for another attempt. You leave the jump boom your body tries its hardest to move the bike around not prepared for anything spectacular. until mid air you realise I'm actually doing it! you catch your bike and get ready to actually land one your bike instead of your feet, hands or back for once. Then the moment catches you by surprise. You landed it! you don't even know what to think so you jump of your bike and yell at the top of your lungs. with the approval of your friends. - AWESOME The feeling of christmas morning. Waking up super early, knowing that you are getting some big gifts. Smelling breakfast cooking, the feel of excietment, and anxiety. Its the best feeling in the whole world. awesome number 247: when you wake up in the morning and your not tired and you're in a good mood

#9 Book of Awesome Gpp301 edition

read the examples....post your own...make it awesome Another Day We’ve all been there. The long commute to work or on the bus route to school. The skies are still dark and the streetlights along the road are still aglow. The day hasn’t even begun but your ready to go into the day and do the same old boring thing that you do every day. The sun appears over the horizon and the dimly lit sky becomes a deep crimson red. Your mood becomes slightly lightened, the music changes, and its your favorite song. Your frown becomes a smile of glistening gold and all of a sudden you feel like the entire world is yours. The sun is peering through the window like a spotlight on stage at a U2 concert. The warmth of the golden light on your cold skin makes you feel like your center stage. You open your mouth and yell the words to your favorite song. It’s like the world is watching you, rock on superstar. Awesome. When you lose track of the day and suddenly realize it's lunch, or the end of the day. When the vending machine finally accepts the dollar. I ALWAYS have issues with the machines at school. It either eats your dollar or spits it back out. Sometimes i pay double, sometimes i dont get anything. The First Time You Say “I Love You”… He. She. Whoever it may be. Saying I love you to your significant other for the first time is one of the moments in life that no matter how joyous or humiliating, you will always remember. Maybe you’re on a romantic date on Valentine’s Day. Maybe you’re trying to one-up the superhero that just got the girl on the movie. Maybe you scribble it down on a sticky note. Spell it out in their favourite food. Send it through time and space electronically. Maybe you stutter it awkwardly. Maybe you mumble it to your feet. Maybe, maybe you have to shout it in a last ditch attempt to save the relationship they think won’t work out. Or maybe you whisper it to no one while you watch the love of your life gallop into the sunset atop a white steed. Love is the greatest gift you can share with someone. No matter how or when it happens, it is a feeling that cannot be replaced. Awesome. Post-Thanksgiving-Dinner Nap You've smelt it cooking all day, and now it's finally time. The meal you've been waiting for for at least the past month; Thanksgiving dinner. You're surrounded by your closest family, but Mom or Grandma has put enough food on the table to feed your whole neighbourhood block. Everyone is waiting anxiously for being told when they can dig in, and then it begins. Turkey, potatoes, turnips, gravy, cranberries, are all being passed left to right, and if you don't pay attention you might miss the stuffing. After the feeding frenzy is over you suddenly feel like you're moving in slow motion as you make your way to the couch. For once there's no nagging about clearing off the supper dishes, we'll get them after, because everyone has been hit with the post-thanksgiving-dinner haze. The only thoughts are how on earth are you going to be able to have your pumpkin pie? Eventually all thoughts are lost as you drift off into your 'turkey-coma'. Awesome. The Adrenaline Rush While Playing an Intense Sport There is nothing quite like the massive rush of energy that shoots through your body as what feels like an electric current, energizes your muscles, propelling you to achieve feats you previously thought were not possible. The thrill of performing at your absolute best with your brain single-mindedly focused on the task at hand, allows any worries to disappear for the time being and just enjoying the epic moment of glory. You know that moment when you've got that unbearable tickle at the edge of your nostril, the tickle that averts your attention from everything around you. No one really knows how to get rid of this annoyance, its just kind of there. You can go hours with this burden, without any signs of it disappearing. You are forced to overcome it, forced to live your life, but you know you cannot really live your life like you know you can, not with this distraction. Then all of a sudden it starts, the tickle intensifies, the itch becomes unscratchable, and everything around you goes silent. It as if time stops, you are the only thing not frozen in time. You uncontrollably inhale all available air, you head cocks back, and then you too are frozen like everyone around you. Then you erupt with a room shaking AAAACCCHHHEEEEEWWWW!!!! and just like that its over, as soon as it hit you it leaves you. That horrible tickle is gone, awesome. Finding Out You Passed The Test You Thought You Failed Your sitting in class, your thinking about the test you took last week, you know that test you didn't study for. The teacher is just standing in front of you, talking about how a half the class did great but a good percentage did not do as well, she says "more studying was needed" (we have all heard that one before). She grabs the big pile of tests and starts to walk up and down the isles giving back tests one at time. Your nervous you know you failed, she is getting closer, your shaking, taping your pencil on your desk so fast the pencil flies out of you hand. Next thing you know that test you thought you failed is sitting in front of you. Slowly you move your eyes to top of the page, and guess what it says......... 55%, yep you passed. AWESOME. Its a rainy and you have the need for a sweet treat. Shrug on that bright yellow rain coat, tug on the old boots and walk to the best ice cream parlor in town. Decide on your favourite flavour and take a walk around. Maybe do a couple spins and twirls in the rain, jump in the biggest puddles and dance all around, all while licking that delicious ice cream cone. Don't think about if anyone is watching you, just enjoy this wonderful moment of.... AWESOME! Game Day Getting up everyday doing the same routine can get pretty boring. This is why Game day is awesome. Waking up on game day is not like any other day. Its like waking up for a purpose or waking up for a mission. The feeling that tonight you will be working as hard as you can to try and win a ball game. This feeling carries with you throughout the day whether it be at school, at work, or duing daily activities. This feeling is the will to win the will to play well. The anticipation, nerves and not knowing what is going to happen is all apart of the fun and preparation for the game. What you do, think, and act will establish your mental game, the most important aspect in order to play well in any sport. After a day of patience and fear comes the ‘last supper’. This meal is not one of your regular meals, this meal has to be a super meal. This meal is going to be the factor that will cause you to last the whole game or half way through. This meal will determine if you can make the final shot or blow the game for your team. . But don't eat to early or to late, at the right moment so when the energy is needed you have the power to use it. The choice is yours. Finally the time has come when the uniform is put over your head and you are ready to represent yourself on the field, floor, court, or ice. This is your stage, your time to show the fans and the opposing team what you got. This is the day you look forward to. To step on the turf and play the game of your life. Randomly smelling your favourite smell... whether it be the smell of freshly cut grass or your favourite cologne. When you pick up the smell its just pure AWESOME!!! That feeling, when you need a sweater to wear and the timing works out so that you get it straight out of the dryer. That wonderful layer of warmth and comfort that you get from clothing as soon as the beeper goes off. The best is putting on an entire outfit on a cold, wintry day that's clean and smelling of Bountry dryer sheets. Hot clothing out of the dryer makes any clothing comfortable. Even your scratchiest, lowest thread-count tshirt is heaven on your arms, warming you to your very soul. Awesome. The night before your birthday. Getting ready for bed, putting your pajama's on and getting comfy in bed. Your mind is racing and thinking of all the things that happened that day, but then you stop and think, tomorrow is your birthday. You will be flooded with happy birthdays, smiles and hugs tomorrow. Tomorrow is your day. So enjoy it. Making that spectacular catch after almost dropping something. Whether it is in a sport or in everyday life, everyone appreciates a good catch. Especially when it looks like you are going to drop something. Nothign feels better than battling to save your dignity and pride batting it around not quite able to grasp it solidly. While all of existence does everything in its power to keep you from your goal. Then when all hopes seems lost and you are about to give up ad let it drop, a wave of adrenaline and focus sweeps over you and you manage to get a hold of the object. Gripping it tightly so as to not lose it again, a smile pertrudes from your determined face, the occasional cheer erupts from those around you, you have triumphed. Awesome! Waking up in the middle of the night and realising you have a couple hours left to snore away. When you suddenly wake up at three in the morning worried that you are running late, you take a look at your phone, watch, or alarm clock, do some quick math in your head, and realise you have four more hours left of your precious sleep. So, go back to bed get your beauty sleep, and wake up a new person. AWESOME "Having the exact change for your purchase" Whether you are at tim Hortons or even your favourite clothing store, it is just awesome to have the exact change right down to your very last penny, for your coffee or your newest addtion to your closet. The cashier will also be your new best friend. You have so much to accomplish in the next week. You really can't take on anything more or you'll be pulling all nighters like there's no tomorrow. You're sitting in class knowing you have an assignment due, but you have no idea where to even begin. You've told yourself to work on doing a little bit every night but so far that hasn't worked out. You're panicking, it's due tomorrow. How on earth are you going to finish this. Even if you stayed up all night you probably won't have time to finish everything you need to. Then it happens, the teacher asks how everyone is doing with the assignment. Most people are in the same boat as you. The class pleads "we just need one more day, just give us the weekend." Then the teacher lifts the heaviest weight off your shoulders. "Fine, hand it in on Monday". You're biggest wish has come true. You might actually get a few hours of sleep tonight. You will be able to hand in a decent assignment. You can finally breathe again. Awesome!
